Drafted - Selected by Chicago Cubs in 1st Round (13th overall) of 2006 amateur entry draft (June-Reg)

Colvin is ranked as the best contact hitter in the Cubs organization by Baseball America. He holds a career .288 mark in a season and a half as a professional. He has quickly moved up the ranks to AA since being drafted in 2006.

His swing, and good upper-lower body separation would suggest that he'll eventually become a decent power threat. He has already hit 47 doubles and 27 home runs in just 757 minor league ABs.

Batting stance and hitting mechanics

Colvin has a very level swing, which should allow him to make good contact as he progresses to higher levels. He hits the ball hard, and with his excellent speed, regularly legs out doubles and triples. He holds the bat deep in the zone, level with his back shoulder, with a forward tilt, a prime position to initiate the bat load.

As the picture shows, Colvin comes through the hitting zone with the bat level, top hand facing up, a mark of a good rotational swing.

From college bio: Junior outfielder and first baseman who has a "sweet" swing...has added strength since his freshman and sophomore seasons...never played outfield until arriving at Clemson, but has been steady there...slated to be the everyday starter in left field...a career .285 hitter with seven homers, 32 doubles, 72 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 117 games (96 starts) over two seasons...has great athletic ability, including good speed.

Can play the infield (1B), but will primarily play corner outfield, and centerfield.
